Parents of Karen Read speak out in new interview

Suspect in Boston police officer's death remains jailed

Former trooper charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter

In a new interview with Boston 25 News, the parents of Karen Read—the Mansfield woman charged in the death of her Boston police officer—gave their side of the story.

Read, 44, has pleaded not guilty to charges of second-degree murder, motor vehicle manslaughter while driving under the influence, and leaving the scene of an accident causing death.

The charges stem from the death of Officer John O'Keefe, who was struck by a car while directing traffic in Boston on Jan. 29, 2022. Read was allegedly driving the car involved in the accident.

In the interview, Read's parents said they were "devastated" by their daughter's arrest and expressed their condolences to O'Keefe's family.

"This is a terrible tragedy for both families," said Read's father, William. "We just want to express our heartfelt sympathy to the O'Keefe family."

Read's mother, Susan, said her daughter is a "good person" who would never intentionally hurt anyone.

"We know that Karen loved John very much," said Susan. "We can't imagine what she must be going through right now."

Read's parents said they are praying for their daughter and hope she receives a fair trial.

"We believe in Karen," said William. "We know that she is innocent, and we will do everything we can to support her."

Read is currently being held without bail at the Suffolk County House of Correction.
